The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has explained why it has not yet reopened the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

After a meeting on February 25, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced that it had agreed to lift economic sanctions imposed on Niger Republic following a military takeover.

Customs Comptroller Kamal Muhammad, who oversees the Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, stated that they are waiting for the final order to reopen the border.

“The lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on Niger Republic and subsequent restoration of power supply to the neighbouring country are the reasons of my visit to ensure that all is set towards the re-opening of the Illela border as we await the last order,” Muhammad said.

He urged the Illela border community, marketers, and other stakeholders to follow the regulations as ECOWAS lifts sanctions against Niger Republic.

During his inspection visit, the Customs boss assessed the situation and spoke with officials from sister agencies, marketers, and residents.

He asked for more cooperation from stakeholders and encouraged them to maintain a harmonious working relationship at all times.

”My visit to Illela border station is to ensure that all is set in anticipation of the last order of the border re-opening.

“With collaboration, each agency will be able to effectively and efficiently fulfill its assigned mandate,” he said.

The Customs official revealed that a contract had been awarded for the construction of a Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) at Illela border as part of Customs’ commitment to the community.

He expressed gratitude to licensed agents, traditional leaders, and community members, urging them to provide information to Customs to improve their service to the nation.

During the visit, he also raised awareness about the negative impact of smuggling on economic growth.

Muhammad emphasized the importance of stakeholders supporting Customs in fulfilling its responsibilities.

In response, a traditional ruler named Alhaji Muhammadu thanked the comptroller for the visit and promised full support to Customs and other agencies at the border.
