Nigerian singer and music executive Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has shared the story of how he discovered Wizkid, his former signee, dispelling speculations that it happened through social media.
Contrary to popular belief, Banky W revealed that he encountered Wizkid in the studio rather than online. He clarified that an old tweet from Wizkid asking him to sign him was merely a joke, emphasizing that Wizkid was already signed to him at that time, and their social media banter was playful.
In a video message circulating on social media platforms, Banky W, who has transitioned into a pastor, encouraged fans to trust in God and allow their helpers to find them engaged in meaningful pursuits.
He recounted the incident where fans unearthed an old tweet exchange between him and Wizkid, wrongly assuming it marked the beginning of their collaboration. However, Banky W clarified that they had been working together for about a year prior to that exchange.
Banky W further revealed that he discovered Wizkid while the latter was diligently working on his music, not through social media. He recalled hearing Wizkid’s music while scouting unsigned artists and noted that Wizkid had already recorded a chorus with M.I. before they officially collaborated. Banky W fondly remembered seeing Wizkid in person for the first time, serving as a backup singer for another artist, Kellz, at an event.
Banky W signed Wizkid to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment, in 2009, before he parted ways with after releasing his second album, ‘Ayo,’ in 2014.
