Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz squared off in an exhibition match on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia.
Carlos Alcaraz’s stroke on Wednesday night stunned Novak Djokovic to the point where he dropped his racket in shock. In an exhibition match in Saudi Arabia, the Serbian was defeated by his competitor, but he suffered few losses.
Alcaraz broke in the first set’s opening game, but Djokovic gave up the first set 6-4 after two double faults due to a lack of focus. But the Spaniard didn’t take long to regain his best form, breaking once more in the second set to tie the match.
Djokovic attempted to respond, but Alcaraz prevailed in the end. The Serbian player committed three mistakes in a row, giving his opponent the opportunity to serve for the match. The 20-year-old then used that opportunity to complete the comeback.
While neither player would deny that they weren’t playing at their peak in Riyadh, they did excite the local audience with a number of showreel shots. In the third set, it was Alcaraz’s forehand that stole the show; even Djokovic was taken aback by the deftly placed shot.
Following a timid return of a powerful serve to Djokovic, the Wimbledon winner found herself disadvantaged. The 36-year-old next tried to employ one of his deadly cross-court shots, but Alcaraz shifted to his right and unleashed a powerful forehand down the line that left the player dumbfounded.
Incredulous, Djokovic dropped his racket and laughed to himself. Alcaraz, meanwhile, was spotted beaming broadly as he forced a deuce. The demonstration match demonstrated the developing mutual respect between the world’s two best tennis players, and Djokovic was eager to give his opponent credit following his loss.
After the game, he made the following statement: “At such a young age, what he has accomplished is impressive.” He’s a really kind and modest man. He has a wonderful family, excellent morals, and a great team. It’s amazing to have him in our sport. He is one of the sport’s leaders at the moment, and it is certain that he will lead this game in the ensuing ten to fifteen years. You may trust us with the tennis.”
In response, Alcaraz expressed even more respect for Djokovic, adding, “It’s incredible to share the court with him in official tournaments and in this event.” I’m picking up knowledge from him. I’ve always dreamed of being in this position and facing him head-to-head after seeing him win the major championships. Playing with him makes me very pleased, and perhaps I can continue. We’ll be sharing the court a lot because he acts like he’s twenty. I want to congratulate him and express my gratitude for partnering with me on this match.”
