The Acting Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has arrived at the Governor’s office for the swearing-in ceremony as the state governor.

Aiyedatiwa will be sworn in as the Governor of Ondo State following the departure of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu earlier on Wednesday.

Aiyedatiwa’s journey to becoming the governor of Ondo State has been a long one, lasting one year. This was due to Akeredolu’s health challenges before he eventually passed away on Wednesday in Germany, where he was receiving treatment for prostate cancer.

Aiyedatiwa managed to survive an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly, as well as strong opposition from his late principal’s supporters.

The politics of the state have been surrounded by controversy in recent months, with activists and constitutional lawyers urging Akeredolu to transfer power to Aiyedatiwa in accordance with the 1999 Constitution.

Akeredolu had been frequently hospitalized abroad before passing away on December 27, 2023.

Prior to his death, Akeredolu, who was serving his second term as governor, transferred power to Aiyedatiwa on December 13, 2023, as he went on another medical trip overseas.

Unfortunately, Akeredolu, aged 67, was unable to return to Nigeria and succumbed to complications from prostate cancer.
