The Rivers State Assembly Complex is currently undergoing demolition, according to Politicsnigeria.
This is happening at a time of tense political situation in the state, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara is engaged in a power struggle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The demolition started recently, with heavy machinery on site tearing down the building. There are reports suggesting that the Fubara-led government is demolishing the complex for renovation purposes, but there are also indications that it may be politically motivated.
Earlier today, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr. Ehie Edison, chaired a plenary session for the 10th Assembly.
Ehie Edison is a trusted associate of Governor Fubara. This session took place after a court ruling that recognised Ehie as the rightful Speaker and prevented his rival, Martins Amaewhule, from assuming leadership. It is believed that Amaewhule has the support of Nyesom Wike.
During the session, Ehie mentioned that the complex needed repairs after the explosion that occurred on October 30, 2023. He also stated that the governor would arrange for a temporary location for them to meet.
The public became aware of the tension in the state in October when a part of the assembly complex was set on fire. This act was believed to be carried out by Fubara’s supporters in an effort to stop his impeachment. However, President Tinubu intervened, and the impeachment process was halted.
