A decade has passed since the death of Nelson Mandela, the hero who fought against apartheid in South Africa.

Recently, eNCA, a South African broadcaster, visited the house where Mandela spent his final years and discovered that it has been abandoned and is in a state of disrepair.

The house, situated in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, was once a place where Mandela welcomed esteemed guests such as pop star Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, and former US first lady Michelle Obama.

“I moved out because we were having issues with the family trust. We kept on having to ask the trustees to pay the water and electricity bills,” Mandela’s grandson, Mbuso Mandela, who moved out around 2019, told eNCA.

Many South Africans are expressing their sadness on social media and urging Mandela’s family and the government to honor and protect the legacy of the great leader by restoring his former home.

This is in sharp contrast to Mandela’s first residence in Johannesburg after his release from prison, which has been transformed into a high-end boutique hotel called Sanctuary Madiba.
