The police in Kano State have issued a warning about certain party supporters who are planning to start violent protests in the state following the Appeal Court’s decision in favor of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, has cautioned that anyone who tries to disturb the peace in the state will be apprehended and subjected to the full force of the law.

According to him, the Command has received reliable information that certain groups of political party supporters are using non-traditional media platforms to gather people and organize protests in response to the verdict of the Kano State Governorship Appeal Court, which was announced on November 17, 2023.

“The information revealed that the intention of the protesters is to shut down the State in an action which may likely result in violence.

“It’s on this note that the police command issued a warning to residents of the state to be extra-careful as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with the provisions of the law.

“Furthermore, you will all recall that prior to the court ruling, the leaderships of both NNPP and APC had been invited by the Kano State Police Command where a peace accord was signed on Thursday, 16th November, 2023,” he noted.

He further stated that the purpose of the peace agreement is to promote unity and guarantee a peaceful political environment in Kano State, regardless of the outcome of the judgment.

“In furtherance, the leadership of the two political parties promised that no politically motivated clusters of people would be allowed at any location under whatever guise, their supporters would not engage in any mass action suggesting preparation for violent processions, protests, or celebrations that may trigger reactions, unguarded statements from their members likely to increase political tension or undermine the security arrangements and sanctity of the judiciary,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police has urged all residents to stay calm and refrain from participating in any illegal gatherings, protests, or processions that could lead to violence.
