66th Grammys: Tyla Beats Davido and Burna Boy to Win Best African Music Performance

It was a night to remember for South African artist Tyla, as she won the Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.

Tyla’s track “Water,” which gained global traction after its release, In 2023, it triumphed over songs by Nigerian artists, including Davido’s “Unavailable,” Asake‘s “Amapiano,” Burna Boy‘s “City Boys,” and Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” to secure the coveted award.

At just 22 years old, Tyla has become the youngest African to ever win a Grammy. However, Nigerian artists Davido and Burna Boy faced disappointment as their albums “Timeless” and “I Told Them,” respectively, lost in the Best Global Music Album category to Shakti’s “This Moment.”

Meanwhile, Davido’s “Feel” and Burna Boy’s “Alone” were unsuccessful in the Best Global Music Performance category, losing out to “Pashto” by Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain.

This marks a year without any Nigerian artist winning an award at the 66th Grammys.
