Manchester United‘s football director, John Murtough, is said to have met with the club’s women’s team to explain how Mason Greenwood’s situation was handled.
The Red Devils have decided to part ways with one-cap England international Greenwood following a lengthy internal inquiry.
He has not played for the club since January 2022, when he was arrested on charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.
These accusations were withdrawn in February when key witnesses withdrew and fresh evidence surfaced.
Greenwood was named to United’s retained list at the end of the 2022-23 season, with his contract set to expire in 2025, and has spent the summer exercising with a personal trainer.
There were rumors that he would be reintegrated into Erik ten Hag’s plans, but those rumors were met with considerable criticism from United’s women’s team.
As a result, tensions erupted between players and key members of the club’s board, with some members of Marc Skinner’s squad thought to be contemplating their future in Manchester.
Greenwood has already been released by United, with the 21-year-old forward connected with clubs in Italy, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.
According to the Daily Mail, Murtough briefed United’s women’s team about the decision within 24 hours of the official announcement.
During such discussions, the internal investigation procedure and the final decision were explained.
The meeting is claimed to have ended pleasantly, with players understanding Murtough’s decision and the reasons for such a long story taking so long.
World Cup players like as Mary Earps, Ella Toone, and Katie Zelem were not mentioned after their achievements with England in Australia and New Zealand.
