Jose Mourinho has resigned from the UEFA Football Board after only two months, expressing his dissatisfaction with European football’s regulatory body.
In April, the outspoken Portuguese was invited to join an organization founded by ex-AC Milan great Zvonimir Boban and former referee Roberto Rosetti, with numerous notable former players and coaches tasked with bringing about positive change.
Mourinho, on the other hand, has resigned after receiving a four-match ban for his foul-mouthed diatribe directed at Premier League match official Anthony Taylor following Roma’s penalty shootout defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final.
Mourinho has said in a letter sent to UEFA, which was not addressed to president Aleksander Čeferin: “Dear Mr. Boban, in thanking you for the invitation you extended to me to be a member of the UEFA Football Board, I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing to my participation in this group.
The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision. I kindly ask that you also communicate my decision to the President Mr. Aleksander Ceferin. Kind regards, Jose Mourinho.”
Mourinho was enraged with Taylor and his officials’ performance at a European tournament in Budapest, and was captured on camera calling the English referee a “f*cking disgrace.”
Mourinho received three red cards during the 2022-23 season as he clashed with Serie A referees on a regular basis, and a move to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain has been mooted as he enters the final year of his contract in Italy.
