Akpabio Defeats Yari To Clinch Senate Presidency

Senator Godswill Akpabio defeated Senator Abdulaziz Yari to become the 10th President of the Senate.

Akpabio, a former Senator Minority Leader, received 63 votes to defeat Yari, a former Zamfara governor, who received 46 votes.

In the run-up to the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, the lawmakers-elect had begun voting on the floor of the Nigerian Senate.

Senator Ali Ndume recommended Senator Godswill Akpabio after reading the former Akwa Ibom governor’s biography.

Senator Olamilekan Solomon Yayi of Ogun state seconded Akpabio’s nomination.

Senator Ishaku Abbo also nominated Senator Abdul Aziz Yari to be Senate President.
