Wanted: EFCC Goes After Emefiele’s Wife Over Alleged Financial Conspiracy

Published:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued an official statement declaring Margaret Emefiele, the wife of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, as a wanted person in connection with an alleged financial conspiracy.

The declaration is part of an ongoing investigation into the conversion of substantial amounts of money that belong to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In addition to Margaret Emefiele, the EFCC has also identified Eric Odoh, a CBN official, businesswoman Anita Omoile, and Jonathan Omoile, a Bureau De Change operator, as wanted suspects. All four individuals are facing charges related to economic and financial crimes.

Following her husband’s arrest and subsequent court charges, Margaret Emefiele reportedly went into hiding.

The EFCC has shared photographs of the suspects on its official website and social media platforms, urging the public to provide any information regarding their whereabouts.

The situation adds another layer of complexity to the legal matters surrounding Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele’s legal troubles began after he was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, 2023, which resulted in his arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos. Consequently, he faced charges of money laundering and fraud, with the EFCC taking responsibility for the case.

President Tinubu appointed Jim Obazee as the Special Investigator to examine the operations of the central bank during Emefiele’s tenure.

Emefiele refuted the allegations, categorizing them as “satanic.” He stated that he had acquired the required approvals while serving and accused the private investigator of pursuing a prejudiced agenda.
