The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have initiated a 7-day warning strike due to the federal government’s delay in paying their salaries.
This decision to go on a warning strike was made by the joint action committee of the two unions after a meeting in Akure over the weekend.
President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced this during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, where he shared the outcomes of the meeting.
He mentioned that their demand for the payment of four months’ worth of salaries that were withheld after the 2022 nationwide strike has not been fulfilled.
Ibrahim explained that the warning strike was the last option after numerous protest letters and communications with the federal government did not lead to the payment of the withheld salaries.
This decision comes after recent nationwide protests by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) regarding the current economic challenges, which have caused a significant increase in the cost of living nationwide.
