A Nigerian lawmaker has shared a story from his childhood about dropping out of school during his primary school years.
Senator Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District, admitted that he left school because he wanted to impress girls in his community.
He mentioned that a cultural tradition played a role in his decision to quit school, as it was believed that the most desirable girls were attracted to drivers.
He confessed that he left school to fit in with a group of popular boys, but later realized his mistake and returned to complete his education.
During a Senate session, Monguno expressed his views on the motion brought forward by Adebule Oluranti (APC, Lagos West) regarding the growing issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
“I now said okay, if that is the case, let me also go and be a driver so that when we line up for festivities, girls will also come and invite me to dance with them. So, because of that, Mr President, I dropped out of school,” he said.
Monguno shared his early life story to highlight the drawbacks of children dropping out of school to pursue other interests.
