Tobi Amusan, a track and field athlete from Nigeria, has broken the African indoor record, which is yet another incredible accomplishment.
The 26-year-old broke Glory Alozie‘s previous record of 7.82 with a time of 7.77 seconds at the first leg of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Amusan showed her talent in the semifinal heat, finishing in 7.91 seconds before this incredible performance.
She won the final event, finishing ahead of Ireland’s Sarah Lavin, who finished in third place with a time of 7.91 seconds, and Nia Ali, the 2019 World Outdoor Champion, who finished in 7.89 seconds.
With her incredible accomplishments, Amusan is now the second-fastest athlete in the world for the season. The Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton holds the record with a time of 7.75 seconds from last week’s Corky Classics in Lubbock, Texas.
Moreover, Amusan has risen to the twentieth position on the global all-time list. Notably, she has beaten each of the three African records that Alozie had previously held, ensuring that she is the current Commonwealth Games champion.
By clocking an astounding 12.68 seconds in 2019, Amusan had already eclipsed Alozie’s 1999 African Games record of 12.74. Her unwavering success and record-breaking exploits serve as a testament to her extraordinary talent and commitment to the game.
Amusan went on to beat Alozie’s 12.44 African record with a time of 12.42 seconds, winning her first Diamond League championship.
The records for Nigeria, the Nigerian Championships, Africa, the African Games, Africa indoors, the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, and the entire world are presently held by the sprint hurdler.
