President Bola Tinubu has submitted a proposal to the Senate for the approval of new salaries, allowances, and official benefits for judicial officers.
The president’s request was presented in a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during a session on Wednesday.
Tinubu explained that the executive bill, titled “Judicial office holders, salaries and allowances, etc, bill 2024,” aims to establish a new legal framework to enhance the compensation of judicial officers.
He emphasized that the bill is intended to strengthen the independence and effectiveness of the Nigerian judiciary system.
He said: “The judicial office holders, salaries and allowances, etc, bill 2024 seeks to prescribe salaries, allowances, and benefits for judicial officers to end the prolonged stagnation in their remuneration and to reflect contemporary social-economic realities.
“The bill which establishes a new legal framework for the remuneration of judicial officers will also ensure significant improvement in the welfare capacity and independence of the judiciary.
“While I hope that the judicial office holders, salaries and allowances, etc, bill 2024 will be carefully, yet expeditiously considered and passed by the senate.”
Akpabio then sent the bill to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, as well as the Committee on Finance for additional legislative review.
The committees are expected to provide a report within two weeks.
