Thomas Tuchel is set to depart from Bayern Munich at the end of the season due to a series of three consecutive defeats that have severely impacted their chances in the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League.

The former Chelsea manager’s position was put in jeopardy following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen and a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the first leg of the last 16 in Rome.

The situation worsened on Sunday when the 32-time German champions suffered a 3-2 loss to Bochum, falling eight points behind league leaders Leverkusen.

Although Bayern’s chief executive initially stated that Tuchel’s job was secure after the defeat, the club ultimately decided to make a change.

“FC Bayern Munich and head coach Thomas Tuchel have jointly decided to end their working relationship… on June 30, 2024,” the club wrote on their website.

“This is the outcome of a constructive discussion between CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Thomas Tuchel.”

Tuchel added, “We have agreed that we will end our working relationship at the end of this season.

“Until then, I will of course continue to do everything I can with my coaching staff to achieve maximum success.”

Tuchel successfully coached Chelsea to win the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup titles in just 18 months, from 2021 to 2022. Prior to this, he had achieved back-to-back Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and led them to the Champions League final.

In March 2023, Tuchel took over as the coach of Bayern Munich, replacing Julian Nagelsmann. He guided the team to a thrilling Bundesliga title win on the final day of the season, overcoming a collapse by his former club, Borussia Dortmund.

However, the 2023–24 season has been challenging for Bayern, with unexpected losses to Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen earlier in the season, followed by consecutive defeats in February.

“In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer,” said Bayern CEO Dreesen.

“Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024 /25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and Bundesliga.”
