Former President Ernest Bai Koroma has been called by Sierra Leone police for interrogation in connection with the failed coup attempt late last month.

On Thursday, Information Minister Cherno Bah stated the former leader was summoned to the police headquarters in Freetown within 24 hours.

According to a statement published by his office, Mr. Koroma stated that he would honour the police summons and urged his followers to remain calm.

“I maintain an open mind and stand ready to support the police investigations to the fullest. Let the rule of law reign supreme in our democracy,” he added.

Mr. Koroma’s summons comes after the arrest of his former security assistant.

On November 26, gunmen assaulted a military barracks and broke into a jail in Freetown, liberating around 2,000 detainees.

At least 19 individuals were killed, including 13 troops, in what the authorities later described as an attempt to topple the government.

Mr. Koroma issued a statement condemning the act immediately after it occurred.

So far, 60 people have been detained in connection with the incident, including 37 troops.

Although he has formally resigned from politics, Mr. Koroma, who served as president from 2007 to 2018, remains a powerful force in Sierra Leone politics.
