The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has claimed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is missing all the stolen public funds that were recovered by the previous government of Muhammadu Buhari.

According to SERAP, this revelation came to light when the CBN management was unable to provide an explanation for the whereabouts of these looted funds.

“BREAKING: Recovered stolen public funds between 2016 and 2019 are reportedly missing from the Central Bank of Nigeria [CBN]. The Auditor-General of the Federation wants the CBN to account for the money,” the group wrote on X.

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) previously disagreed with the Nigerian government regarding the amount of stolen funds that the government claimed to have recovered between 2015 and 2022.

However, the Buhari government has now revealed that over one billion dollars in stolen funds were indeed recovered by the administration over a period of seven and a half years.

Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, announced this during a press briefing, stating that the Buhari-led administration has successfully recovered $1 billion in stolen funds thus far.

Malami also mentioned that this money has been utilized in various sectors of the economy, including poverty alleviation.
