The Senate has passed the Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024.

This decision came after the Senate reviewed the report from the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

Senator Muntari Dandutse, the committee chairman, presented the report during a session on Wednesday, March 20.

President Bola Tinubu had sent the Bill to the National Assembly for consideration and approval the previous week.

The Senate fast-tracked the process by temporarily setting aside some of its rules and sent the Bill to the Committee of the Whole for review.

Following discussions, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Bill to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further examination. The committee is expected to report back within one week.

The Student Loan Bill aims to make higher education more accessible to financially disadvantaged Nigerians by offering interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund established in the Act. This fund is intended to support education for all Nigerians.
