The Senate on Thursday confirmed President Bola Tinubu‘s nominations of newly appointed service chiefs.

The upper chamber had previously screened the top brass.

According to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the service chiefs answered questions on defense-related and topical subjects during the closed-door session.

The President had urged that the Senate confirm the military chiefs in a letter read on the Senate floor on Monday.

Following the reopening of plenary on Thursday, the Senate began screening the service chiefs, with each of them taking the podium to speak about how they will address instability in the country if confirmed.

The service chiefs confirmed are Maj. Gen. C.G Musa (Chief of Defence Staff), Maj. Gen. T. A Lagbaja (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla (Chief of Naval Staff), and AVM H.B Abubakar (Chief of Air Staff).

The military chiefs briefly introduced themselves to the Senators during the screening.

The head of defense was the first to speak. He stated that troops of the Armed Forces under his command will work relentlessly to protect the country.

He stated that members of the Armed Forces will continue to do their duty to Nigerians.

The Army Chief of Staff was the second to take the podium. He stated that Nigeria has faced difficult security scenarios that have had an impact on the economy and the social fabric.

He stated that insecurity has warped Nigeria’s growth plan, and that he will bring in new proactive, adaptive, and inclusive skills to reverse the negative trend.

The Army chief stated that if confirmed by the Senate, he will do all possible to justify the President’s trust in him.

The Naval Chief, on his part, stated that the Nigerian Navy will increase monitoring and surveillance to ensure the effectiveness of its activities.

He committed to improve on previous techniques, establish new ones, and expand inter-agency cooperation to combat oil theft.

According to the Air Chief, more air power would be used to reduce threats to the country. He stated that his ultimate focus will be on air combat capability.
