South Africa’s goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, emerged as the hero for his team as they defeated Cape Verde in a penalty shootout to secure a spot in the AFCON semi-finals on Saturday.
After a tough 0-0 draw during regular time, the match had to be settled through penalties, which South Africa won 2-1.
Williams stood out in the shootout, making four crucial saves.
As a result of his exceptional performance, CAF confirmed that Williams has become the first goalkeeper in AFCON history to save four penalties in a single shootout.
South Africa will now participate in their first AFCON semi-final since the 2000 edition, which was co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria.
The 1996 AFCON champions will face Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Wednesday in Bouake.
Williams currently plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, one of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants.
The 32-year-old made his debut for South Africa on March 5, 2014, in a friendly against Brazil. He was given the opportunity due to a sprained ankle suffered by the first-choice keeper, Itumeleng Khune.
