Beatrice Itubo, the Labour Party‘s 2023 governorship candidate in Rivers State, has stated that she met with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
While confirming the meeting, Itubo remained mum on its aim, noting that “discussion is still in progress.”
She also declined to say if she plans to join the state’s ruling party or merely support the Fubara government.
“I will only give details when we conclude our deliberations,” she said.
The conference takes place at a time of increased political tension in the state. Remember that 27 members of the State House of Assembly defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.
The defectors, who were purportedly loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, stated that they left owing to discontent with internal divisions within the PDP, namely the conflict over the job of National Secretary.
Residents, however, believe that the decision is more deeply entrenched in Governor Fubara’s continuing power battle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
