Despite the ongoing political challenges, the government of Rivers State has reached an agreement on a significant budget of N800 billion for the upcoming fiscal year.

This budget, known as the ‘Budget of Renewed Hope, Consolidation, and Continuity’, places emphasis on crucial sectors such as infrastructure, education, health, and security.

The state’s Information Commissioner, Joe Johnson, and State Secretary, Tammy Danagogo, have highlighted the extensive discussions and considerations that have shaped this budget proposal.

The primary goal of this budget is to instill hope among citizens and maintain the state’s progress in both infrastructure and human capital development.

This news comes after twenty-seven lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, who are believed to be loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, officially switched their support from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The lawmakers, who initiated the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stated that internal divisions within the PDP were the main reason for their decision to defect to the APC.

Enemi Alabo, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, explained that ongoing legal disputes regarding the party’s secretaryship and the inability to establish communication with the party at the national level were factors that led to their frustration and defection.

The lawmaker emphasised the difficulties that members of the Rivers State PDP encountered, such as the burning of the assembly chambers, as well as instances of bullying and intimidation.
