Emma Hayes, 47, will become the coach of the United States Women’s national team next summer.
According to reports, the highly-rated coach will earn $2 million per season, which is significantly more than her predecessor Vlatko Andonovski, who was paid $446,495.
Chelsea tried to persuade Hayes to stay in London by offering to quadruple her salary. However, she has decided to leave Chelsea and take on the role with the USWNT.
Hayes will begin her tenure with two matches in June, followed by two more in July. She will then lead the team in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Hayes is set to make her return to the United States after a 13-year absence from coaching in the country. She began her coaching career in 2001 with the Long Island Lady Riders, a team based in London. After three years, she moved on to coach the Iona Gaels university team before returning to London to serve as an assistant coach at Arsenal. Two years later, she decided to come back to the States to manage the Chicago Red Stars.
As the manager of Chelsea, Hayes aims to finish her time with the Women’s Super League (WSL) team on a positive note. The team is determined to defend their league title and secure their seventh championship under Hayes’ leadership. Additionally, they have aspirations of making a deep run in the Women’s Champions League, as they have yet to claim the European crown.
