Real Madrid advanced to the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday after a thrilling 120-minute match in Riyadh that ended in a 5-3 victory for Atletico Madrid.
Within the first seven minutes of the game, Atleti scored the first goal. Mario Hermoso met Antoine Griezmann‘s corner, deftly guiding his header back across Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the far corner.
Unfortunately, Atleti’s lead was totally erased in less than 20 minutes. First, Ferland Mendy completed a superb team play to make it 2-1. Later, Antonio Rudiger scored an equalizer from Luka Modric’s corner.
But there was still time for Griezmann to score another important goal in the first half. He made a wonderful move to get away from Rudiger and Modric before beating Kepa with a shot from the edge of the box. After being tied with Luis Aragones on 173, he subsequently became Atleti’s all-time best goalscorer.
After 78 minutes, a terrible mistake by Kepa caused the ball to bounce off Rudiger and into the back of the net, giving Atleti the lead. But Real Madrid would respond quickly, and Dani Carvajal’s fierce goal forced extra time.
In the 116th minute, Real Madrid emerged victorious in the encounter. A cross from the right was met by Joselu Mato, but Stefan Savic’s misdirected header found its way into the Atleti goal. In stoppage time, Brahim Diaz would add an additional five.
That implies that Atletico Madrid will return home and Real Madrid will play either Barcelona or Osasuna in the final on Sunday. With two derbies scheduled to occur in the next few weeks, they will be looking to rebound.
