Protesters gathered at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Wednesday to show strong support for the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The gathering took place just before the PDP governors forum meeting and a day ahead of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where important leadership discussions are expected to occur.

Carrying signs with messages backing both leaders, the protesters expressed worries about internal divisions within the PDP, accusing certain party members of causing conflict among the leadership.

This public display of support highlights the deep rifts and ongoing power struggles within the party.

The PDP is currently experiencing internal unrest, with some members calling for the resignation of the National Working Committee (NWC) due to perceived leadership failures.

Despite these challenges, the NWC released a statement through National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, expressing confidence in Acting Chairman Umar Damagun.

The statement praised Damagun for his efforts in stabilizing and guiding the party towards growth, which was commended during the 584th NWC meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The ongoing conflict between Wike and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, shows no signs of resolution.
