The Acting Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, has announced that there are currently 37 illegal universities operating in Nigeria.
He mentioned that some arrests have been made in recent months.
Maiyaki also revealed that the Department of State Services (DSS) has been involved in cracking down on these illegal institutions.
He urged parents to visit the commission’s website to check for illegal and legal universities in Nigeria in order to prevent their children from becoming victims of these institutions.
Maiyaki’s statements come after the suspension of degree certificates from two francophone West African countries.
The action was taken after an undercover journalist exposed how he obtained a degree from a university in Benin Republic in less than two months and was even able to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
