Chelsea’s France international striker and summer signing Christopher Nkunku is yet to make his competitive debut for his new club after suffering a serious knee injury during pre-season in the United States.

The forward has been working hard in his recovery with Mauricio Pochettino revealing on Friday he will join up with team-mates as soon as next week.

“We had some conversations. He said to me, ‘Coach I’m going to be ready for after the international break, Newcastle. I asked yesterday. He said ‘Hmm’. I said to him ‘No, you are a liar.’

“He’s close, he’s doing really, really well. We are so happy with the way he is recovering, very professional. Romeo Lavia is also close.

“They will train today on the pitch and hope next week they will both be with the team and see after, day by day to assess and see when it is possible to start to play with the team.”
