The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has recommended that President Bola Tinubu should consider importing food items in order to lower their cost.

The suggestion comes as Nigerians continue to protest against the current economic difficulties and high cost of living during Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Monday, TUC President Festus Osifo expressed concerns about the widespread hardship throughout the country.

He mentioned that Nigerians have never experienced this level of hardship, not even during military regimes.

Osifo pointed out that these issues are partly due to the government’s lack of support for locally made products and services, as well as a shortage of competent leaders in charge.

“Nigerians must live to see tomorrow before we can understand how beautiful a government policy is. The national pride of striving to achieve food sufficiency locally should be temporarily relaxed,” Usifo said.

“Governments at all levels should immediately purchase sufficient quantities of food items from different parts of the world and share them with vulnerable Nigerians.

“Importing food abroad at this point will assist to reduce the hyper-inflation of food in the country. FG should allow importation of food items for Nigerians consumption within the next two weeks,” he added.

Osifo recommended that President Tinubu should enhance his administration’s economic management team and consider recruiting talented Nigerians from around the world, regardless of party or tribal affiliations, to come up with solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
