According to reports, Manchester United has no plans to exercise the option to extend Anthony Martial’s contract when it expires at the end of this season.
The French striker is in the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, but if the team wants to, they can choose to give him an additional year.
The Manchester United administration, according to The Athletic, is unwilling to keep Martial on board beyond the end of the current campaign and is instead willing to let him go for free.
In 2019, Martial re-signed a five-year contract with the Red Devils, with an option for United to buy out his remaining year.
Given that United are hesitant to extend Martial’s contract, the forward may leave in January.
Martial became the most expensive teenager in football history when he signed a £36 million contract to join United from French team Monaco back in 2015.
Three bonus clauses totaling £7.2 million each were included in his original contract, raising the possible fee to £57.6 million. The total amount paid was ultimately £44.7 million.
Martial has scored 90 goals in 317 games in his nine years at the team. His best season total came in 2019–20, when he scored 23 goals in 48 games.
