Chelsea’s £37 million ($47 million/€43.2 million) deal with Roma for the permanent sale of Romelu Lukaku may be in jeopardy following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

Lukaku’s troubled time at Chelsea seemed to be coming to an end after his loan move to Roma in the summer, with Mourinho reportedly having faith in the striker to lead his Roma team.

According to The Sun, the two clubs had also agreed to make the deal permanent in the summer of 2024. However, with Mourinho being sacked earlier this week due to a significant decline in performance this season, there are concerns that the deal may not go through. This complicates matters for Chelsea as they are trying to free up finances to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

With the appointment of Roma legend Daniele De Rossi as the head coach of the Giallorossi, Lukaku will need to work hard to impress the Italian if he wants to continue playing for the Serie A side. After the season ends, Lukaku is set to return to London. He still has two more years on his contract with the Blues and could potentially go back to the Premier League if he fails to impress De Rossi.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his summer transfer, Lukaku has had a commendable season with La Lupa so far. He has scored 14 goals in 25 games, which is quite impressive. Additionally, he performed well in the Europa League group stages, contributing to six goals in just as many games.

The new Italian coach of the Giallorossi will have the opportunity to see the Belgian striker in action for the first time when they face a struggling Hellas Verona on Saturday, January 20th.
