The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has urged workers to shut down all operations of shipping businesses and commence an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday in response to a continuing disagreement with shipping companies about poor pay and employee welfare.

At a press conference on Thursday, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of MWUN, bemoaned that since 2018, Organised Labour has been warring with shipping businesses over the minimal requirement for shipping companies on worker welfare, to no effect.

According to him, despite several ultimatums and interventions from the previous Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo, shipping companies, mostly multinationals, had refused to yield, expressing regret that the working conditions of the nation’s shipping industry workers were nothing short of modern-day slaves.
