Kunle Oluomo has been impeached as Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

At Tuesday’s plenary session, 18 of the State Assembly’s 26 members decided to impeach Oluomo.

Oluomo was impeached for suspected misappropriation of money, highhandedness, and other charges.

The Assembly quickly chose Oludaisi Elemide as the next Speaker.

After the impeachment, the new speaker delivered his first speech, urging members to remain calm. He clarified that the impeachment was not specifically aimed at Governor Dapo Abiodun, as some had speculated.

He emphasized that the members have the constitutional right to elect their leaders in the House. The House then adjourned for two weeks, with the new speaker holding the maze, which symbolizes the House’s authority.

On September 6, 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought Oluomo before a Federal High Court in Lagos, accusing him of money laundering amounting to N2.475 billion.

Oluomo was charged alongside three others: Oladapo Samuel, Adeyemo Taiwo, and Adeyanju Nimota Amoke (who is currently at large).

The charges against them include conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering, as filed by the EFCC.

Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the EFCC’s prosecution lawyer, informed the court that the defendants committed the alleged offenses between 2019 and 2022.

He stated that the event occurred in Ogun State.

Oyedepo informed the court that they stole N2.475 billion from the coffers of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Oluomo was, however, given bail while the trial is ongoing.
