Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has vowed to not celebrate his birthday until all Nigerians live in security and economic prosperity.
The former governor of Anambra State who is currently challenging the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February presidential election, stated that he would stick to his over 20years tradition of not celebrating his birthday as a result of the “deplorable state of the nation.”
In a thread on his official twitter account, Obi decried the recent killings of over 200 people in Mangu, Plateau State, and over 100 people in Benue State.
“This month alone over 200 lives have been lost to sustained violent attacks in Mangu LGA in Plateau State. Similarly, in Benue State, over 100 lives have been lost in recent times, the latest being 27 persons killed in Adogo Ugbaam, Akpuuna, and Diom communities in Ukum LGA.
“There are also many other cases of kidnappings and killings in different parts of the country. I want to celebrate in a New Nigeria where the lives and properties of citizens will be secure. I want to celebrate in a productive Nigeria that can create opportunities for our youths.
“I want to celebrate in a Nigeria that works for all and which Nigerians can be proud of. This, and not my birthday, is the true celebration that will be beneficial to all Nigerians.”
The leader of the famous Obidient Movement urged his supporters to instead mark his 62nd birthday by lending a helping hand to the needy to cushion the effect of the current economic hardship ravaging the country.
