The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, is concerned about his health while in the custody of the Department of State Services.

They are requesting urgent medical attention from a cardiologist and are appealing to President Bola Tinubu to prevent any harm to Kanu while in custody.

Kanu has been held since 2021 after being brought to Nigeria from Kenya.

His bail application was denied by Justice Binta Nyako despite his deteriorating health.

Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, has stated that he received information about his brother’s critical illness and emphasized the need for immediate medical intervention to prevent a serious health crisis.

The statement partly read, “We got information this morning that he is critically down. He has not been granted access to his personal doctors, and he urgently needs a cardiologist. He should not be allowed to die in DSS custody”.

The family criticized the political leaders in the South-East for not helping to secure the release of their son.

They believed that certain individuals were benefiting from his imprisonment, which is why the political elite seemed uninterested in getting involved in his case with the President.

“How be it that nobody among Igbo political leaders has reached Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release almost a year after he came to power?

“Is it not deliberate? Have they not been gaining access to the President concerning other issues? It’s a shame that Kanu is being punished for asking for the freedom of Ndigbo, and the leaders have abandoned him to die in DSS custody,” the family said.
