Harry Maguire is reportedly expected to be stripped of captaincy duties even if he stays at Manchester United.
Despite losing his starting spot, the England international defender kept his status as Red Devils’ captain in 2022-23. Last season, the 30-year-old centre-half was only used from the start eight times in the Premier League.
Maguire is currently extensively linked with a move away from Manchester, with Tottenham, Newcastle, and West Ham rumoured to be interested. He has made no hint that he may seek a transfer, but he is not a key player in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
The Sun even claims that Maguire will be stripped of his captain’s armband regardless of the final decision on his future. Bruno Fernandes, who led by example on the field for much of the 2022-23 season, is likely to take up the post permanently.
Maguire’s contract has two years left on it, but United wants to get rid of him. The Red Devils aim to collect funds to reinvest in the summer window, having already completed a £60 million ($77 million) move for Mason Mount.
