Two policemen were killed by unidentified gunmen in Imo State, according to a statement by police spokesman Henry Okoye on Saturday.
The officers were ambushed while on patrol in the early hours of Saturday along Old Gariki Road in Okigwe Local Government Area.
The gunmen threw dynamite at the police vehicle and then engaged in a shootout with the officers.
“In the process, two officers paid the ultimate price while four others survived the attack,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, along with the commanders of Mopol 18 and 64, immediately led police operatives from the Special Tactical Unit to the scene of the attack upon receiving information about the incident.
The police commissioner stated that he will not tolerate attacks on security personnel in the state and assured that the police will make every effort to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Okoye also urged residents of Okigwe and nearby communities to provide any information that could help the police in their investigation.
