Interim head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Finidi George, has announced that he plans to start veteran defender Kenneth Omeruo against Mali later tonight, March 26, if Omeruo is fit.
The Super Eagles will face Mali in an international friendly at the Grand Stade de Marrakech in Morocco by 10 p.m. (Nigerian time) tonight.
During Nigeria’s match against Ghana, Kenneth Omeruo was on the bench as coach Finidi George chose to play a new player, Benjamin Tanimu, instead of the experienced defender.
Omeruo was dealing with fitness issues after getting injured during training before the game against Ghana.
The good news is that Omeruo has trained with the team ahead of tonight’s match, indicating that he is ready to play.
“If he is fully fit, Omeruo will start today,” the Super Eagles interim coach told Brila FM.
“I was quite impressed with Tanimu on his debut. He showed a lot of composure, especially when we know it is not easy to play for the national team.”
Reports suggest that Moses Simon, Alhassan Yusuf, and Umar Sadiq may also start in tonight’s game.
Coach Finidi George is likely to use Yusuf to replace the injured Brentford midfielder, Frank Onyeka, while Sadiq could start in place of Cyriel Dessers, who scored in the game against Ghana.
