The Federal High Court in Abuja has awarded N100 million to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele for a breach of his right to personal liberty.
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi ruled on Monday that Emefiele’s protracted incarceration without trial violated his basic rights.
The court further ordered the Federal Government and its agents not to arrest or detain Emefiele again without a court order.
The decision was issued in a basic human rights claim filed by the former CBN governor following his protracted imprisonment by the Department of State Services.
Emefiele had urged the court to order the respondents to pay N1 billion in damages and to stop future arrests and detentions.
The controversial former CBN governor was arrested on June 10, 2023, shortly after being suspended by President Bola Tinubu.
