Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, was finally brought to court on Friday to face corruption charges by the Federal Government. The arraignment took place at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

Emefiele, wearing a blue Guinea Brocade babaringa with a Hausa cap, was accompanied by his lead counsel, Mathew Burkaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, as ordered by the court.

The former head of the apex bank is accused of granting corrupt benefits to a CBN staff member, Mrs Saadat Ramalan Yaro, through the awarding of various contracts. However, Emefiele denied the six charges against him.

Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is heading the legal team of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the prosecution of the defendant on behalf of the Federal Government.

Currently, there is a heated legal dispute regarding the request for Emefiele’s bail until his trial.

Justice Hamza Muazu will soon deliver a ruling on the bail application.
