Ramón Ayala, nicknamed Daddy Yankee, has announced his retirement from music.

The Puerto Rican singer and rapper declared this on stage during the final day of his farewell tour, La Meta, in Puerto Rico over the weekend.

He now intends to “evangelise the world” and live for Jesus, he says.

In a video statement posted to his Instagram page, ‘The King Of Reggaeton’ stated that a part of him felt empty and that he had been trying for a long time to fill a vacuum in his life that no one could fill.

In his message, the ‘Despacito’ crooner cited a Bible verse: “I was able to travel the world for years, winning many awards, applause, and praise, but I realised something that the Bible says: ‘What good is it for a man to gain the whole world if he forfeits his soul?’”

He added, “One story is over, and a new story is going to begin, a new beginning.”

Daddy Yankee began his career in 1994 and is widely considered the forefather of the reggaeton genre.

He left the company at the age of 46.
