Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been granted access to a medical doctor of his choice by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on the grounds that he requires urgent ear surgery due to his reported failing health.
In his ruling, Justice Nyako also directed the secret police to monitor, document, and seal any medical sessions performed on the IPOB leader for security reasons.
The trial judge also dismissed the DSS‘s preliminary objections to the motion before him, arguing that Kanu has the right to medical care even while in jail.
In its decision, the court also ordered that all of Kanu’s medical data be made available to the IPOB leader.
Kanu has been detained by the DSS since June 2021 and is facing terrorism-related allegations made by the secret police.
