Manchester United are said to have made an enhanced bid of up to £50 million for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, but the Blues have quickly reacted.
Manchester United has offered £45 million upfront for Mount, with a further £5 million in add-ons, according to The Athletic. Chelsea, on the other hand, has quickly responded by seeking a sum of £60 million plus £5 million in add-ons. While talks between the two teams are ongoing, no definitive agreement has been reached.
Chelsea earlier rejected a £40 million proposal from Manchester United, but Erik ten Hag is apparently determined to complete a move for Mount in order to expand his options in the middle of the park for next season.
However, United may not continue to improve their offer since they believe that because the England international has only one year left on his contract, Chelsea will be obliged to do business or risk losing the player for free next summer. The midfielder has already turned down repeated offers from Chelsea to sign a new contract, bolstering United’s belief that a deal can be reached.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United would match Chelsea’s counter-offer, which might be pivotal in the drawn-out trade dispute. After spending over £600 million in the previous two transfer windows, the Blues need to sell players this summer to balance the books.
