Opposition candidate Joseph Boakai has officially been declared the victor of Liberia’s run-off presidential election.

Incumbent President George Weah had already conceded on Friday night, as Mr. Boakai had established an insurmountable lead.

However, not all the votes had been tallied at that point.

On Monday afternoon, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, the chairperson of the National Elections Commission, announced that the president-elect had won with 50.64% of the total votes cast, while President Weah received 49.36%.

Mr. Boakai has made a promise to rescue the West African nation and transform it into a country that Liberians can take pride in.

He previously served as vice-president under Nobel peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who transferred power to President Weah in 2018.

The 2023 election was the closest presidential race since the end of the civil war in the country twenty years ago.
