Erik ten Hag’s team wasted a comfortable lead against the underdogs from League Two before managing to secure another unconvincing victory.
Manchester United have advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup, but their performance was far from impressive and certainly not enjoyable. They narrowly defeated Newport County in south Wales, winning 4-2 after regaining a lead that they had carelessly lost.
Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo scored beautiful goals in the first 13 minutes, giving United a perfect start and calming their nerves in the unfamiliar environment. However, Erik ten Hag’s team became too relaxed and allowed the League Two side to get back into the game.
Just before half-time, Bryn Morris took a shot and defeated United’s new goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, bringing the game to life. Newport continued to build on this momentum, and Will Evans, who had a background in farming, scored the equalizer with a sliding tackle.
Newport’s enthusiastic fans were on the edge of their seats, hoping for a replay at Old Trafford and even daring to dream of eliminating the struggling United team. However, the superior skills of the Red Devils ultimately proved decisive.
In the 68th minute, Antony skillfully directed the ball into the net after Luke Shaw’s powerful shot hit the far post, putting United back in the lead. To further ease the tension, Rasmus Hojlund scored in added time, allowing the visiting team to breathe a sigh of relief.
