Amad Diallo scored a last-gasp winner in extra time and was then sent off as Manchester United secured their place in the FA Cup semi-finals after a dizzying 4-3 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils quickly escaped the trap and deservedly took the lead in the 10th minute when Scott McTominay grabbed a rebound after Caoimhin Kelleher parried Alejandro Garnacho’s shot.
McTominay then saw a great opportunity to extend United’s lead when he shot straight at Kelleher from 12 yards before the Merseysiders turned the tie around with a quick brace just before half-time.
First, Alexis Mac Allister fired a shot wide past Andre Onana at his near post, and then Mohamed Salah crashed in after the United goalkeeper could only deflect Darwin Nunez’s shot into the path.
Liverpool dominated most of the second half but were unable to score a third, and the home side were rewarded with four minutes left when substitute Antony turned inside the penalty area and curled a fine shot into the far corner.
Marcus Rashford then fired wide with the last shot of regular time, and Liverpool appeared to make the most of the breathing space when substitute Harvey Elliott fired a speculative shot from 25 yards past Onana via a deflection in the 105th minute.
However, United refused to stand still, and Rashford equalized for the hosts eight minutes from time before another substitute, Amad, won an epic and thrilling cup tie in the final seconds before receiving a second yellow card for his wild celebration.
The Red Devils will now face Coventry City in the semi-finals at Wembley Stadium.
