Deji Adeyanju, a rights activist and lawyer based in Abuja, has called on the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize public safety and avoid becoming a tool for personal vendettas.
In a statement he endorsed, he expressed distress at witnessing the misuse of police power, originally intended to serve and protect the community.
According to him, Adeyanju firmly believes that law enforcement agencies should channel their efforts toward fighting crime and ensuring public safety. In his view, engaging in civil matters that do not pose an immediate threat to public welfare diverts valuable resources and undermines the trust between the police and the people they are meant to serve.
The arrest of Very Dark Man, according to Adeyanju, raises serious questions about the impartiality and fairness of the police, particularly in their interactions with individuals from marginalized communities. He warns that such actions can worsen existing social divides and erode the public’s confidence in the justice system.
Deji Adeyanju, however, urged the police authorities to reevaluate their priorities, focusing on combating crime, responding to emergencies, and addressing the genuine concerns of the people. He stressed the importance of adopting community-oriented policing strategies that emphasize building trust, promoting inclusivity, and fostering positive relationships with the residents they serve.
He called on the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Very Dark Man’s arrest. He emphasized the need to ensure that due process is followed and that any potential misconduct or bias is identified and appropriately addressed.
