Jurgen Klopp believes that only those unfamiliar with football would not see Jeremy Doku’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister during the Liverpool and Manchester City match as deserving of a penalty kick.

The two long-standing rivals faced off at Anfield in a crucial Premier League title race showdown, ending in a 1-1 draw.

In the final minutes of the game, Doku made contact with Mac Allister’s chest in the penalty area with his studs, but despite the severity of the incident and a VAR review, the referee’s decision to continue play was upheld.

Liverpool was denied the opportunity to secure all three points and move ahead of Arsenal in the standings.

Klopp expressed his disagreement with the decision. In an interview with Sky Sports, he stated, ” “This is a penalty for all football people on the planet. If you think it is not one then maybe you aren’t a football person.”

Klopp not only criticized the penalty call at the end of the match but also lamented his team’s inability to turn their statistical advantage into a win.

In the match, Liverpool had 53% possession and took 19 shots compared to City’s 10. Both teams had six shots on target.

This result means Liverpool and Arsenal are now tied with 64 points each after 28 games, while City has played the same number of games and is just one point behind.

Klopp told the BBC: “The second half was the best we ever played against Manchester City, definitely.

“They hit the post of course but we should have scored two or three goals. Exceptional football game. Wow.

“For me, we proved today [for] the first time 100 per cent we are exactly where we should be. We will fight for it and see what we can get.

“I don’t think I’ve seen them struggling like they were today. We were outstanding.

“The mother of all results is the performance. The good things we have to keep doing.”
