Spain have won the 2023 Women’s World Cup after beating the Lionesses of England 1–0 in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday.
Olga Carmona’s strike went down in history as the goal that won Spain their first Women’s World Cup trophy, breaking England hearts after capitalizing on a mistake by Barcelona’s Lucy Bronze as La Roja defeated the Lionesses 1-0 at Stadium Australia.
England had chances before that, most notably Lauren Hemp hitting the crossbar, but Bronze lost the ball in the middle of the park before halftime, and Ona Batlle’s clever switch of play over to her vacated right side allowed Spain to capitalize on the space left, Carmona firing across Mary Earps to find the bottom corner.
Spain could’ve increased their advantage if Earps hadn’t saved Jennifer Hermoso’s penalty, and despite raising the roof in Sydney with so many England fans in attendance, the Lionesses got the closest to leveling the scores when Lauren James’ effort was pushed over by Cata Coll.
The European champions may have defeated Spain on their route to Euros triumph last year, but La Roja exacted their revenge in the nicest way possible on Sunday, becoming world champions.
